The Cornelius Low House, located at 1201 River Road in Highland Park, NJ, is a historic house that was built in 1746. It is one of the oldest surviving houses in New Jersey and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The house was built by Cornelius Low, a prosperous merchant and landowner who played a significant role in the early history of New Jersey. Low served as a member of the Provincial Council, which was the highest governing body in the colony, and he also served as a judge on the Court of Common Pleas. Low was a strong supporter of American independence and was active in the Patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and was a signer of the Articles of Confederation.
The Cornelius Low House is an excellent example of Georgian architecture and is one of the best-preserved 18th-century houses in the state. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
The Cornelius Low House is open to the public for tours and events. The house is operated by the Daughters of the American Revolution and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Tours are available by appointment only.
